‘It is designed to break your heart’

Baseball-Rain-01Wednesday’s ESPN Baseball Tonight podcast ended with a recording of former Major League Baseball Commissioner A. Bartlett Giamatti reading his essay, “The Green Fields of Mind.”

It’s an account of the end of the Red Sox 1977 season. Giamatti captures the mood all us baseball fans feel moving from summer, when baseball and long sunny days seem endless, to the fall, when the bats and balls… and the sun, it seems, have been tucked away for the cold months ahead.

The Green Fields of Mind makes numerous references to rainy days, which makes it somewhat relevant to The Rainout Bog. If you haven’t read it, you can do so here.

Also, when you have about 10 minutes free, listen to Giamatti, a former Yale president, recite his essay.
